Pompon n\u2019\u00e9tablissait pas premi\u00e8re \u0153uvre de sculpteur animalier, un lucane, t\u00e9moigne d\u2019un regard de proximit\u00e9, d\u2019une attention qui s\u2019\u00e9tend dans un premier temps de l\u2019insecte \u00e0 la basse-cour. C\u2019est \u00e0 l\u2019apparition d\u2019une oie dans un rayon de soleil, au halo qui soulignait la silhouette en mouvement, qu\u2019il attribue le tournant de son \u0153uvre : la simplification. En 1905, \u00e0 50 ans, l\u2019artiste d\u00e9cide de se consacrer \u00e0 l\u2019art animalier et au petit format. Le d\u00e9veloppement du bronze d\u2019\u00e9dition, tout au long du XIXe si\u00e8cle, t\u00e9moigne de celui d\u2019un march\u00e9 de collectionneurs plus fiable pour un artiste que le circuit de la commande publique. En se liant par contrat en 1906 avec le fondeur et galeriste Adrien-Aur\u00e9lien H\u00e9brard, Pompon s\u2019inscrit dans une p\u00e9riode de renouvellement de la sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9. Le succ\u00e8s du <em>Livre de la jungle<\/em> de Kipling, illustr\u00e9 \u00e0 la m\u00eame \u00e9poque par Paul Jouve, tout comme le d\u00e9veloppement des \u00e9changes entre m\u00e9tropoles et colonies multiplient les sujets possibles et les mani\u00e8res de les traiter. Tr\u00e8s vite, les critiques ont vu chez Pompon l\u2019influence des bas-reliefs \u00e9gyptiens ou encore l\u2019\u00e9pure de la statuaire asiatique. Les formes modernes qu&#8217;il adopte pourraient faire oublier sa formation acad\u00e9mique du XIXe si\u00e8cle et le long travail de synth\u00e8se qui l\u2019accompagne. Praticien reconnu, il a gravi les \u00e9chelons et perfectionn\u00e9 son art aupr\u00e8s de Rodin, avant de travailler pour Camille Claudel ou Ren\u00e9 de Saint-Marceaux. Il impressionne alors par la qualit\u00e9 de son interpr\u00e9tation du mouvement, sa mani\u00e8re de r\u00e9partir la masse et de travailler les volumes. Alors que plusieurs sculpteurs, par un travail d\u2019\u00e9pure du mod\u00e8le classique, cherchent \u00e0 renouveler la statuaire, Pompon rencontre, en abandonnant la figure humaine, les pr\u00e9occupations des avant-gardes et des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations plus jeunes \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019image de Jean Chauvin, qui se lance dans l\u2019abstraction en 1909 \u2013 sans pour autant les \u00e9pouser. Singulier, ce \u00ab jeune vieil artiste \u00bb, comme Colette le d\u00e9nommait, acquiert l\u2019autonomie de d\u00e9velopper ses sujets sur le tard : le succ\u00e8s arrive alors qu\u2019il entre dans sa soixantaine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>La patte de l\u2019artiste<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Contrairement \u00e0 des sculpteurs animaliers ant\u00e9rieurs, \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019Antoine-Louis Barye, Pompon ne cherche pas le spectaculaire. Il ne retranscrit pas \u00e0 proprement parler de sc\u00e8ne, de combat, de ruade, mais s\u2019attache \u00e0 rendre son mod\u00e8le le plus proche possible. Pratiquant peu le dessin, il part dans les champs ou dans les all\u00e9es de la m\u00e9nagerie du Jardin des plantes comme un peintre va sur le motif, transportant avec lui un peu d\u2019argile contenue dans une bo\u00eete qu\u2019il porte autour du cou. Sa m\u00e9thode originale de modeler sur le vif, l\u2019artiste l\u2019explicitera \u00e0 plusieurs reprises. Il esquisse dans un premier temps l\u2019animal de fa\u00e7on r\u00e9aliste \u00ab avec presque tous ses falbalas \u00bb, puis commence \u00e0 \u00e9purer. Ses oiseaux n\u2019ont pas de plumes et ses b\u00eates n\u2019ont pas plus de poils, tous ces d\u00e9tails rel\u00e8vent pour lui de l\u2019anecdote. Ce qu\u2019il voit, c\u2019est avant tout un mouvement auquel il s\u2019attache \u00e0 donner le plus de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 possible. \u00ab C\u2019est [lui] qui d\u00e9ter- mine la forme [&#8230;] ce que j\u2019ai essay\u00e9 de rendre c\u2019est le sens du mouvement. de la tigresse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La qu\u00eate de la lumi\u00e8re dans le bronze et les changements d\u2019\u00e9chelle am\u00e8nent l\u2019artiste \u00e0 entamer des collaborations avec d\u2019autres fondeurs. Apr\u00e8s la pr\u00e9sentation du pl\u00e2tre du <em>Tigre<\/em> (premi\u00e8re appellation de la sculpture) au Salon des Tuileries de 1923, c\u2019est Valsuani, dont on retrouve le cachet accompagn\u00e9 de la mention \u00ab cire perdue \u00bb sur notre exemplaire, que le sculpteur choisit pour fondre son \u0153uvre. Il le juge en effet capable d\u2019un rendu plus lisse. Tr\u00e8s soucieux des finitions, dans lesquelles il s\u2019investit lui-m\u00eame, Pompon supervise scrupuleusement les \u00e9ditions. Comme le souligne le cabinet Lacroix &#8211; Jeannest, qui a expertis\u00e9 cette <em>Tigresse jouant<\/em>, la mani\u00e8re dont les yeux sont creus\u00e9s avec soin, dont les ar\u00eates permettent de souligner les volumes et enfin, plus subtil, la fa\u00e7on dont la zone d\u2019ombre de l\u2019animal \u2013 son ventre \u2013 contraste par un traitement plus granuleux, rugueux, portent la signature du ma\u00eetre. Les \u00e9ditions posthumes, qu\u2019il n\u2019avait pas autoris\u00e9es, ordonnant m\u00eame la destruction des moules en sa possession, n\u2019ont pas le m\u00eame soin. D\u2019une \u00e9preuve \u00e0 l\u2019autre, Fran\u00e7ois Pompon n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 reprendre, \u00e0 remanier, et cette \u0153uvre ne fait pas exception. Les livres de comptes de l\u2019artiste en d\u00e9nombrent quatre \u2013 m\u00eame si \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque la num\u00e9rotation n\u2019\u00e9tait pas obligatoire \u2013 toutes diff\u00e9rentes et pouvant notamment \u00eatre distingu\u00e9es par la longueur de la terrasse. Celle-ci, courte \u00e0 l\u2019avant et \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re, semble \u00eatre la derni\u00e8re et la plus aboutie. Le pi\u00e9tement \u00e9troit par rapport \u00e0 l\u2019ampleur du mouvement arr\u00eat\u00e9 du f\u00e9lin cr\u00e9e une dynamique, le geste de la patte ant\u00e9rieure droite projet\u00e9e vers l\u2019avant se rapportant \u00e0 un jouet hors champ. La t\u00eate l\u00e9g\u00e8rement d\u00e9croch\u00e9e de l\u2019axe du corps installe un effet de proximit\u00e9. Apparu pour la derni\u00e8re fois en vente \u00e0 Lyon en 1971, cet exemplaire est rest\u00e9 dans la m\u00eame famille jusqu\u2019\u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui. Il peut \u00eatre compar\u00e9 \u00e0 celui que conserve le mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts de Dijon ou encore \u00e0 celui pass\u00e9 en vente en 2014 chez Christie\u2019s pour 505 000 \u20ac au marteau. Le quatri\u00e8me exemplaire n\u2019est \u00e0 ce jour pas localis\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Mais les fameux livres de comptes de Pompon nous indiquent qu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 en premier lieu achet\u00e9 dans la r\u00e9gion de Lyon o\u00f9 l\u2019artiste bourguignon (natif de Saulieu) jouissait d\u2019un vrai succ\u00e8s. En 1930, il fait d\u2019ailleurs son entr\u00e9e dans les collections du mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts et il est mis \u00e0 l\u2019honneur par le biais d\u2019un portrait, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par L\u00e9on Schulz, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion du Salon d\u2019automne de la ville . Dans la capitale des Gaules, il \u00e9tait repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par deux galeries, Saint-Pierre et Dubly, et c\u2019est par la seconde qu\u2019est pass\u00e9 notre exemplaire, d\u00e9pos\u00e9 par le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre orf\u00e8vre et dinandier Claudius Linossier. Les deux hommes \u00e9taient amis et il est clair que Linossier a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 Pompon un certain nombre de collectionneurs.
